AI search visibility FAQ
What business owners actually ask about AI search — answered directly, including the questions where the honest answer is that nobody can promise anything.
The short version
AI assistants find local businesses through the same public web that search engines index, plus the business listings that carry your details. Nobody can buy placement in an AI answer or guarantee one. What improves your odds is unglamorous: pages that can be fetched, answers that can be quoted, and business facts that agree everywhere they appear.
The basics
Is AI search replacing Google?
Not replacing it, but adding to it. Google itself now shows generated summaries above the traditional results, and assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot answer questions that used to start as searches. The practical effect is that a business needs to be findable in the old way and quotable in the new one, because both are happening at once.
Do AI assistants read my website directly?
Sometimes, and it depends on the assistant and the moment. Some fetch pages live when answering a question, some rely on a search index, and some answer from what they learned during training, which may be a snapshot from months ago. That is why a page has to be crawlable, accurate today, and consistent with what other sources say about you.
Where do AI assistants get local business information?
From the open web they can crawl, from whichever search index the assistant is wired into, and from the business listings and directories that carry your details. That is why an accurate business profile and a crawlable website matter more to this than any AI-specific file or setting.
Do I need to do something different for each AI product?
No, and anyone selling per-product optimization is selling a story. The inputs are largely the same: pages that can be fetched, answers that can be extracted, and business facts that agree with each other. What differs between products is how they weight those inputs, which is not something anyone outside those companies controls.
Getting found and quoted
How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?
There is no submission process and no way to buy placement, so the honest answer is that you cannot make it happen. What you can do is remove the reasons you would be left out: make the pages fetchable, answer real questions directly, keep your business facts identical everywhere they appear, and publish something specific enough to be worth quoting. That improves the odds without promising the outcome.
Why does an AI assistant describe my business incorrectly?
Almost always because your details disagree somewhere. Your site says one thing, your business profile says another, and a directory nobody has looked at in years says a third. A system assembling an answer blends them. The fix is reconciliation, not more content, and it is covered in detail on the GEO page.
My competitor gets mentioned and I do not. Why?
The most common reasons, in the order worth checking: their pages are reachable and yours are partly blocked, they answer the specific question directly while your site talks around it, their business facts are consistent while yours conflict, or they have published something specific that is genuinely worth citing while both of you otherwise say the same things. It is rarely one dramatic cause.
Does having a blog help with AI search?
Only if the posts say something the rest of the web does not. A blog restating general advice gives no system a reason to prefer your version of it. One page explaining how you actually handle a specific situation, with the detail that only comes from doing the work, is worth more than twenty summaries.
Practical questions
Should I block AI crawlers from my website?
It is a genuine trade-off rather than an obvious yes or no. Blocking reduces the chance your content is reproduced without attribution; it also removes you from the assistants your customers may be asking. The decision can be made per crawler, because training crawlers and live-retrieval crawlers use different names, so you can allow the ones that might send you customers and block the ones that only harvest.
What is llms.txt and do I need one?
It is a plain markdown file at the root of a site listing its authoritative pages and what they cover. It is a proposed convention rather than a standard any engine has committed to honouring, so it should be treated as documentation rather than a mechanism. It is cheap to publish and unambiguous, which is why this site has one, but nobody should describe it as a way to get cited.
How do I check what AI assistants say about my business?
Ask them. Open two or three assistants and ask what your business does, where it is, what it charges, and whether it is open now. Ask as a customer would, not by pasting your URL. Where the answer is wrong, note which fact is wrong and then find the source still carrying it — that is your work list.
How is progress measured if nobody can promise rankings or citations?
Against a recorded baseline of things that are observable: what is indexed, what the profiles say, where the business facts disagree, how fast the site responds, and whether the questions customers ask are answered on a page. Those are re-measured the same way afterwards. It is less exciting than a ranking promise and it is the only version that can be checked.
Is any of this worth it for a small local business?
The corrective parts almost always are, because they are cheap or free and they compound: fixing a blocked page, reconciling a phone number, moving an answer to the top of a page. The speculative parts are worth less and should be treated as such. If someone is proposing a large ongoing spend aimed specifically at AI citations, ask them how it will be measured.
What we will not tell you
That we can get you into ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot, or Google AI Overviews. Those systems select sources by mechanisms their operators control and change without notice, with no submission process and no appeal. Any provider promising a citation, a ranking, or a traffic figure is describing something outside their control.
